Tata Tea Group’s CFO in conversation with India’s Economic Times
Posted by Admin in Tea Industry News on November 30, 2009
Tata Tea , one of the first Indian companies to go global in pursuit of growth is now working to emerge as an international consumer products giant with a leading presence in the non-alcoholic beverages market. The company’s group chief financial officer L Krishna Kumar in conversation with ET discusses the fineprint of this roadmap.
While the corporate strategy of Tata Tea is to emerge as a beverage major, why is it that tea still continues to account the substantial portion of the company’s revenues?
There is no denying the fact that we are a dominating player in the tea business, being the second largest tea company in the world. Having said that; our product portfolio has undergone a big change over the last four to five years. We categorise tea into two parts. The traditional black tea -which is staple hot beverage in India – and the ready-to-drink & specialty herbal teas that are globally as big if not bigger than black tea. In 2004-05, our turnover was accounted almost entirely by black tea. It was about 90% tea and 10% coffee and other things. Look at the proportion today; the total tea has come down to about 70-75 %. Out of this, the black tea is about 65% and 10% is the non-black tea. The non-black tea was almost negligible five years back. Read the rest of this entry »
Tea lover brews perfection

Entrepreneur develops steeper to ease preparation of beverage.
LONG BEACH — Brewing loose-leaf tea can take an elaborate setup, according to Mei Tung, of Long Beach. Her tea set sits on a large, hand-carved wooden tray and includes small, ornamental porcelain dishes. Most hold dried tea leaves of different varieties; others are for steeping them. She poured boiling water into one of the steeping dishes. Water dripped from the kettle and ran in thin streams around the tray. After a moment, she removed a perforated ceramic basket holding the tea leaves from the hot water and poured it into tiny cups. Again, the tea dripped from the dish’s lip and wet the tray.
“Because we’re tea lovers, we really wanted to design something for tea lovers who travel so they can enjoy their favorite tea on the road,” Tung explained as the tea steeped. So she began producing the Perfect Steeper, a small, portable device that brews loose-leaf tea.

EXCLUSIVE: Tea comparison website relaunched
Posted by Admin in General Tea News, Tea Industry News, Tea Product News on November 14, 2009
A website comparing more than 1000 varieties of loose leaf tea, teabags and teawares was relaunched last week. Buy Tea Online, which opened its doors in 2005, has been completely redesigned to make it easier for tea drinkers to find the right products, first time.
“With whole sections dedicated to green tea, white tea, oolong tea, black tea, pu-erh tea, flavored tea, herbal tea, tea gift sets and samplers, teapots, accessories and more, there’s sure to be something for everyone” said spokesman Richard Fray. “We’ve recreated the site as an online catalog, enabling our visitors better access to a much larger range of tea and tea-related products” he added.
Buy Tea Online, and its sister site, Buy Loose Tea, have become increasingly popular with tea drinkers, wholesalers and industry insiders alike. Whilst Buy Loose Tea is restricted to loose leaf teas only, Buy Tea Online covers a whole range of tea-related products. Fray explains the reason behind this:
“There’s a world of difference between the casual tea newbie wanting to try some raspberry flavored teabags and the genuine connoisseur looking for this year’s Wuyi Rock Oolongs, so both websites are designed to cater to different audiences. Buy Tea Online has a more general feel, featuring teabags, teapots, kettles and other products similar to what you’d maybe find in your local supermarket, as well as an extensive range of loose leaf teas. Buy Loose Tea only features loose leaf teas – no teabags, no accessories, no distractions, just top quality whole leaf tea.”
“And what a selection we have! Comparing products from great online retailers such as Adagio, Generation Tea, O-cha and Culinary Teas side by side with big-name brands like Celestial Seasonings, Stash and Yogi, we think Buy Tea Online is the ultimate method of selecting which teas and teawares to purchase on the internet. It couldn’t be simpler or more effective.”
Fray continued: “We plan on adding to the range over the coming months. It’ll be hard to find enough products of the required standard for us to feature, but we’re looking around and hoping to increase the number of products on the site to maybe a couple thousand.”
